So, what exactly constitutes a balk? Well, it's not just about being a goofy pitcher, although that doesn't hurt. The rules say that a balk occurs when the pitcher does something deceptive, like faking a throw to first base or quick-pitching to the catcher. It's like they're trying to confuse the runner, but really, they're just confusing themselves!
But here's the thing: the rules are a little vague, so it's up to the umpire to decide what's a balk and what's not. It's like they're saying, "Uh, I think that was a balk... or was it? Hmm, let me check the rulebook... yeah, that's definitely a balk!"
And don't even get me started on the history of the balk rule. It's been around since the early days of baseball, but it's been tweaked and modified over the years to make it more consistent. It's like the rule has been evolving like a baseball-playing dinosaur!
