Here’s the golden rule, the one you can tattoo on your dashboard: If the bridge is down, a normal Luton is fine. Tower Bridge’s road deck is flat, so height isn’t a cliffhanger. The only time you’d get stuck is if you tried to drive over it while it’s opening—and trust me, the traffic lights and barriers will scream at you not to.
But what about when the bridge is up? Simple: you wait. You pull over, watch the boats pass, and make a TikTok. It’s the most fun five-minute break you’ll ever have while moving your brother’s drum kit.

What If Your Van is Extra Tall?
Let’s say you’re driving a Luton with a massive cab guard or a roof rack loaded with ladders. Then you’re playing a dangerous game. Check your van’s height sticker (usually on the sun visor or doorjamb). If it’s over 4 metres, take the route via the Blackwall Tunnel or the Woolwich Ferry instead.
Don’t feel bad about taking a detour. Nobody wins the “I Squeezed Under Tower Bridge” trophy. The only prize is an expensive repair bill and a very red face. A friend of mine once drove a Luton full of party balloons under the bridge—he forgot they were helium-filled, but that’s a story for another day.
