Maybe you don’t need to cut power to the entire kingdom. Maybe you just need to fix a leaky sink. That’s where local shut-offs come in. They are your best friends.
How To Turn Water Off For Sink at Aidan Zichy-woinarski blog
Look under the sink. See those two little braided hoses? One for hot, one for cold. Trace each hose back to the pipe. You’ll find a little valve, often chrome or brass, with a tiny handle.
For a sink or toilet, these are usually oval handles or tiny levers. Turn them clockwise (righty-tighty) until they stop. A quarter turn for a lever, a few spins for a handle. Boom. Water is off to that fixture only.
Toilet Troubles?
The toilet shut-off is always the same. It’s the little knob right behind the toilet, on the wall or floor. Usually chrome or white. Find it. Turn it clockwise until it stops. The toilet will stop refilling. Your bathroom floor thanks you.
Pro tip: If that little knob feels like it’s made of plastic and will snap off under your thumb? Stop immediately. That old valve is brittle. Instead, call a plumber. Or… use the main valve and deal with the whole house being dry for a bit. Your call.
