Production designer Laura Fox went crazy with details. She added a fake fish tank to the lobby. The real hotel doesn’t have one. She also changed the color of the wallpaper in the restaurant. Why? To make it feel more “Hawaiian gothic.”
One of the biggest challenges? The weather. Maui is paradise, but it rains. The crew had to pause filming several times because of sudden showers. You can’t fake a storm for a scene about sunny angst.
And the famous scene of Tanya crying by the rocks? That was filmed at sunset. The crew had one shot to get it right. The sun was setting fast. Jennifer Coolidge nailed it, obviously. She’s a professional.
At the end of the day, White Lotus Season 1 is a love letter to Maui. It’s also a roast of luxury travel. So next time you see a fancy pool, ask yourself: “Is there a dead body in it?” If you’re at the Four Seasons Wailea, the answer is no. It’s safe. Just bring your own drama.
