Here’s where things get truly bonkers. Normal Zelda games have enemies like Moblins and Octoroks. In Link’s Awakening, you fight Goombas from Super Mario. You can even find a Chain Chomp as a pet, which you need to feed a dog—yes, a dog—to unlock a hidden doorway. Is this a crossover episode? It feels like Nintendo let their developers raid the toy box.
This mixing of worlds is pure joy. It doesn’t take itself seriously at all. You’ll be exploring a dungeon one minute, and the next you’re talking to a walking, talking cactus or a fisherman who sells you a magic boomerang out of his trunk.
