Hard water is basically just groundwater that’s been on a road trip through limestone and dolomite. As it travels, it picks up calcium and magnesium ions like a tourist grabbing souvenirs. Cincinnati sits right on top of a massive limestone bedrock, so the water doesn’t stand a chance—it’s going to get hard. The Ohio River, which supplies most of the city’s water, is naturally soft, but the treatment process adds back minerals to balance the pH and prevent pipe corrosion. Irony, right?
According to the city’s water reports, the hardness level here hovers around 100 to 150 parts per million (PPM). That’s considered “moderately hard” on a national scale, but when you compare it to, say, Boston’s famously soft water (which is basically rain in a pipe), it feels like you’re drinking from a stalactite. Don’t believe me? Look at your dishwasher after a few months—those white crusty spots are the water’s calling card.
What that hardness does to your life (and your appliances)
First, let’s talk about your hair and skin. Hard water makes soap react by forming a scummy residue that sticks to your body instead of rinsing off. That “squeaky clean” feeling? It’s actually a lie—your hair is coated in mineral gunk. I remember moving to Cincinnati and thinking my shampoo had suddenly become useless. Nope, it was just the water fighting back.
Then there’s the plumbing. If you own a home here, you’ve probably seen white, crusty buildup on your faucet aerators and showerheads. That’s limescale, and it’s the enemy of water heaters, coffee makers, and washing machines. Over time, it reduces efficiency and shortens the lifespan of these appliances. A friend of mine had to replace her boiler after just five years because the mineral deposits were so thick it looked like a coral reef inside. (Not kidding — she showed me photos.)
