Walk into the lobby, and you’ll witness a spectacular mix of humanity. You’ll see the “Old Guard” in their sequins and sharp suits, looking like they just stepped out of a James Bond film. They are beautiful, but don’t let them intimidate you. They are also, statistically, very nice people who just like an excuse to dress up.
Then, you’ll spot the “Tech Bro” in dark jeans and a cashmere hoodie that costs more than your rent. He looks like he’s about to pitch an app, but he’s actually there for the Wagner. And finally, you’ll see yourself: the “Nervous Newbie” in a nice blouse and slacks, clutching your ticket like it’s a winning lottery slip. We all start there.
The Golden Rule: The “Airport Test”
Here is my personal, foolproof rule. I call it the Airport Test. If you would be embarrassed to be seen in your outfit while sitting in first class on a long-haul flight, it’s probably too sloppy. If you look like you just rolled out of bed for a red-eye to Denver, reconsider.
But if you look put-together enough to politely ask a flight attendant for a glass of wine, you’re golden. Think polished casual. A blazer over a t-shirt, a nice dress with a cardigan, or even dark jeans with a crisp button-down. Nobody is checking your waistline for cummerbund violations.
