Now we get into the really unique stuff. This is where rabies becomes a drama queen. There are two main plots: Furious Rabies and Paralytic Rabies. Spoiler alert: neither is a good time at the beach.
Furious Rabies (The “Hulk Smash” Version)
About 80% of cases follow this path. The first clue? You become extremely agitated. Bright lights, loud noises, and especially the sight or sound of water will make you panic. This is the classic “hydrophobia” (fear of water).
Dog Bite and Rabies: 10 Essential Tips to Stay Safe 2026
No, you’re not suddenly afraid of your bathtub. It’s that your throat muscles go into painful, spastic cramps when you try to swallow. Even thinking about water can trigger it. You’ll be thirsty but unable to drink—which is basically hell on earth.
You might also get aerophobia (fear of drafts) or even start drooling like a faucet. Your personality flips—you could go from shy to aggressive. This stage lasts about 2 to 7 days.
Paralytic Rabies (The “Slow Melt” Version)
The quieter, less-movie-famous version. Instead of going berserk, you just slowly lose the ability to move. It starts in the bitten limb and spreads, like your body is turning into a sleepy sloth.
You eventually become completely paralyzed, then slip into a coma. It’s less dramatic, but just as serious. Both versions end the same way, so don’t pick favorites. This can last a bit longer, maybe up to 14 days.
