So, back to the holiday - Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday of October every year, which means that the date changes from year to year. It's a day to recognize Columbus's achievements, but also to acknowledge the complex history and controversies surrounding his voyages. And, let's be honest, it's also a great excuse for a long weekend and some sales at the mall.
Now, about that school question - most public schools and universities are closed on Columbus Day, but it's always best to check with your local school district to confirm. Some private schools and online schools might have different schedules, so don't assume you're off the hook just yet. And, if you're a college student, you might want to check your syllabus to see if you have any assignments due on that day.
In recent years, there's been a growing movement to rethink Columbus Day and instead celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day, which honors the Native American communities and their contributions to our society. It's a way to acknowledge the complex history of our country and to promote inclusivity and diversity. And, who knows, maybe one day we'll have a national pizza party to celebrate instead - a pie in the sky, perhaps?
