Seriously, Mike McFarland’s resume reads like a nerd’s shopping list. He was in One Piece, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Space Dandy. If you played a video game in the 2000s, he was probably in that, too. He was the voice of Gerrard in Final Fantasy X and countless characters in World of Warcraft.
But here’s the thing that makes this news so tough: 56 is way too young. It’s barely old enough to have a mid-life crisis, let alone retire. He left us too soon, and the silence feels weird. Imagine a world without Master Roshi’s creepy laugh or Havoc’s deadpan groans. It’s like a pizza without cheese—technically pizza, but deeply wrong.
He wasn’t just a voice actor, though. Mike was also a director and writer. He directed the English dub of Attack on Titan and My Hero Academia: Two Heroes. That means he’s partly responsible for all those times you cried during an anime. So, thanks, Mike. And also, how dare you?

The Jokes Were Real
One of the best things about Mike McFarland was that he knew he was funny. Fans often recall his work on Dragon Ball Z: Abridged, where he voiced the Narrator. He brought a goofy, fourth-wall-breaking energy that made the parody even better.
Remember the scene where the Narrator goes, “Next time on Dragon Ball Z!” and then just starts arguing with the characters? That was pure Mike. He had a gift for making you feel like you were in on the joke. He didn’t just read lines; he played with them like a kid with a toy.
I once saw a clip where he was recording a scream for a character getting hit by a truck. He stopped, looked at the mic, and said, “I think I need a chiropractor after that.” That’s the energy. He made hard work look like a party.
