Science backs up the African influence. A 2026 study in the journal PLOS Genetics looked at Dominican DNA. The average Dominican has about 49% European, 40% African, and 10% Indigenous ancestry. That’s almost half African!
But here’s the wild part: those numbers vary wildly by region. On the northern coast, African DNA is higher. In the central mountains, Indigenous blood is stronger. It’s a living map of history.
So yes, genetically, many Dominicans are more African than European. But culture wins over genetics for identity. That’s what makes it so cool.
The Elephant In The Room: Haiti
You can’t talk about this without mentioning Haiti, the other half of the island. Haitians are overwhelmingly of African descent—95% plus Black. The Dominican Republic has a complex, sometimes tense relationship with Haiti.

This has shaped how Dominicans view race. Some Dominicans try to distance themselves from Blackness because of anti-Haitian prejudice. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s real.
However, many young Dominicans are reclaiming their African roots. You see it in Afro-Dominican pride movements, natural hair blogs, and music that celebrates the African beat. Change is happening.
