You might think this is fancy kitchen tech. Nope. The TDS meter’s true home is the fish tank.
Aquarium geeks needed to know if their fish were swimming in toxic soup. A sudden TDS spike meant a dead fish. So, they invented the tool.

Now, we use it to test tap water, filtered water, and even that weird bottle you found in your car. Thanks, fish nerds!
What Do The Numbers Mean? (The Fun Part)
A reading of 0–50 ppm is basically naked water. It’s so pure it’s almost boring. Distilled water lives here.
100–300 ppm is your standard tap water. It’s got a little personality—some calcium, a hint of magnesium. It’s the “medium roast” of water.
Then you hit 500+ ppm. That’s spicy water. It might taste chalky, salty, or like a rock licked you. It’s not dangerous, but your taste buds will know.
Anything over 900 ppm is basically a mineral bath. Don’t drink it. Save it for a spa day for your houseplants.
