Because latitude and longitude turn your “I’m lost” into “I’m at 40.7128° N, 74.0060° W.” That’s the difference between a panicked phone call and a calm, “I’ll meet you by the hot dog stand.” Plus, it’s how your GPS knows you’re not in the ocean when you’re actually just at the supermarket parking lot.
But honestly, the real reason is bragging rights. Imagine telling your friend, “Oh, I’m at 34° south, 18° east,” while sipping coffee. They’ll think you’re a spy or a geographer. You’ll nod mysteriously. You might even wear a fedora.
Method 1: The phone trick (a.k.a. the lazy person’s gold mine)
Open your phone’s maps app—Google Maps, Apple Maps, whatever. Drop a pin anywhere, and boom, the coordinates pop up like a surprise birthday present. On iPhone, long-press the map, then swipe up on the info card. On Android, tap the pin and look for the numbers that look like alien code at the bottom.
I once did this to show my dad where we parked at a county fair. He stared at the numbers, then at the Ferris wheel, and said, “So… we’re here?” Yes, Dad. That’s literally the point. It’s like leaving a digital breadcrumb that even Hansel and Gretel would envy.
Method 2: The website route (for when your phone is a brick)
If your phone dies (classic), use a laptop. Sites like latlong.net or whatsmygps.com will ask for your location permission. Click “Allow,” and suddenly you’re a dot on the map with numbers floating around your head. It feels like being a video game character—except the only quest is finding a bathroom.
Pro tip: you can also type an address into these sites, and they’ll spit out the coordinates. So if you’re planning a secret meeting spot, you can send your friend “44.9769° N, 93.2762° W” instead of “the third bench from the left, near the pigeon that looks judgmental.” Good luck with the pigeon.
