Here’s the kicker: Sue played Marlene for over 20 years. That’s longer than most marriages last these days. She wasn’t just a guest; she was part of the furniture, the sofa you’ve had since the 90s that somehow still fits the room.
Think about that. While Del Boy was falling through bars and Trigger was getting his long service award, Sue Holderness was quietly building a legacy. She showed up, did her bit, and made every scene count. It’s like the bass player in a band—you don’t always notice them, but the song falls apart without them.

She even returned for the later episodes after the original series ended. That’s loyalty. She could have retired, but she came back for the laughs. It says a lot about how much fun that set must have been, like going back to the pub where everyone knows your name.
What You Can Learn From Marlene
Here’s your takeaway: Marlene taught us that you don’t need to be the main character to be essential. In your own life, you might not be the one making the grand speeches or landing the big deals. But you’re the one holding it together, handing out advice, and making sure everyone has a drink.
She also showed us that a good laugh can get you through anything. Whether it’s a dodgy husband or a mould in the conservatory, just find the humor. Sue Holderness brought that spirit to every single episode, and for that, we owe her a round at The Nag’s Head.
So next time you see that episode where Marlene and Boycie argue about the statue of a nude man, nod your head. You’re watching one of the best. And if you ever meet Sue Holderness in the supermarket, just give her a wink and say, “Alright, Marlene?” She’ll probably smile—she knows she’s a legend.
