The arrested man is currently in custody, waiting for a court date. He hasn’t been charged yet—just arrested, which is a step below. I’m curious to see what his defense will be, if there is one. “I don’t remember”? “I thought she was going to miss the bus”? The excuses write themselves when you’re delusional.
Meanwhile, the woman is recovering, but she’ll probably never walk past a bus stop the same way again. We talk about “survivor’s guilt” when people survive attacks—but what about “survivor’s hypervigilance”? That’s the real long-term sentence. Every shadow, every footstep too close.
A final thought—from me to you
I wrote this article partly because the story grabbed me, but also because I want you to be safe out there. Not scared, but aware. The world is full of wonderful, kind people—and a few who are fighting demons we can’t see. Keep your eyes open, your heart soft, and your distance from the curb. And if you see something weird, report it. You might be the reason someone doesn’t end up in a hospital.
Alright, that’s all from me. Go hug someone you love, and maybe give the next bus a little extra space. You never know.
