If summer is stuffy, winter is the opposite extreme. The Eye has heating built in, thank goodness. But it’s not like cranking up a radiator in your living room. The heating is designed to take the edge off, not to turn the capsule into a sauna. You’ll still feel the chill from the glass windows—which, by the way, are double-glazed but not exactly insulated like a house.
So, if you go in December, wear layers. (And maybe bring a flask of tea. I’m not judging.) The irony is thick here: we’re complaining about heat in summer, but in winter, we’re shivering while trying to spot the Shard. The Eye is an equal-opportunity discomfort machine.
What the Staff Say (Off the Record)
I asked a friendly attendant about this, and he laughed. “Mate, people always ask. We tell them it’s ventilated, but they expect AC. I’ve seen folks strip down to tank tops in July. It’s wild.” He also mentioned that the best time to ride for comfort is early morning or late evening, when the sun isn’t cooking the glass capsules like a greenhouse.
But here’s the catch: even with the vents wide open, the glass acts like a magnifying glass in direct sunlight. You’re basically sitting in a giant terrarium. (Remember that feeling from school science class? Not fun.)
