Every small town in Nebraska has a unique festival. There’s a town that celebrates the crane migration in the spring. Half a million sandhill cranes stop there. People wake up at 5 AM just to watch them dance in the river. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s totally Nebraskan.
Then there’s Omaha. Don’t sleep on Omaha. It’s got a legendary zoo (ranked one of the best in the world), amazing craft breweries, and a food scene that will make you rethink everything you thought about “flyover country.” You can eat a gourmet donut, sip a sour beer, and pet a rhino all in the same afternoon. Try that in New York.
Why You Should Care (Even If You Never Go)
You might be thinking, “Cool, but I live in a city. What’s Nebraska got for me?” A lot, actually. Nebraska is where the mail works. It’s where community still means something. It’s a reminder that slow can be better. When your life is a blur of notifications and traffic jams, Nebraska is that deep breath you forgot to take.
It’s also home to Kool-Aid. Yep, that colorful sugary drink was invented in Hastings, Nebraska. Every year, they have a Kool-Aid Days festival where they build the world’s largest Kool-Aid stand. If that doesn’t make you smile, I don’t know what will.
