The headline villain here is the raisin. Hot cross buns are famously studded with currants, sultanas, and raisins.
Here’s the chilling truth: grapes and their dried forms are toxic to dogs. Even a small amount can cause sudden, acute kidney failure in some dogs, while others seem oddly unaffected. It’s a dangerous lottery you never want to play.
Veterinarians still aren’t 100% sure why they’re toxic, but the risk is real. Symptoms can include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of appetite, often appearing within 24 hours. Never risk it.
The Spice Factor
Even if you somehow picked out every single raisin, the bun itself isn’t safe. The warm, festive spices we love can be problematic. Nutmeg, in particular, contains a compound called myristicin.
In large amounts, nutmeg can cause hallucinations, disorientation, and a racing heart in dogs. While the amount in a single bun is usually low, it’s an unnecessary chemical stress on their system.
Then there’s the cinnamon. While not toxic, it can irritate a dog’s mouth and digestive tract, leading to an upset tummy. It is simply not worth the potential tummy ache.
